An Introduction

As a recent college graduate, I find myself without a paying job.
(Let me preface that by saying I do have an internship with the Independent Weekly and, recently, the Full Frame Documentary Festival but alas those gigs don’t really pay. The experience, however, is completely worthwhile.)
I have only just figured out what I want to do with my life. That fact, unfortunately, has left me with very little experience in the field I want to break into: film criticism. I’ve always loved film for its entertainment value, but now I see it for more than that. My film studies class at Duke University in the Spring of ’09 (taught by the au courant Negar Mottahedeh) opened my eyes to a new world of cinema, in which cinema is art, history, narcissism, aestheticism, and voyeurism. All I want to do now is be immersed in the shining light of film.
I want to learn as much as possible about film history and theory. Grad school is not an option for this year, particularly because I failed to apply (hey, why spend the money if you aren’t sure?). Next year is highly likely, but until then I embark on my film journey alone, assisted only by the books on theory and the films that I see. Read the rest of this entry »
